AMCO

AMCO engines were Introduced in 1947 as a side line by Anchor Motor Co. who were based in Chester, Cheshire, England. Their first really successful engine design was the AMCO 3.5 PB introduced in 1949 and designed by Ted Martin. AMCO engines were distributed and serviced by Henry J. Nicholls under the name of Mercury Models from HJN’s shop at 308 Holloway Road, London. In April 1952 Anchor Motor Co. ceased model engine production in favour of lucrative government work and sold its model engine sideline to Aeronautical Electronic & Engineering Co. In Alperton, Middlesex, who under the guidance of Dennis Allen started production late the same year of the 3.5cc PB and the 3.5cc BB, both engines were commercially available in 1953 with some mechanical reliability improvements (lightened piston, billet con-rod). In March 1955 AMCO engine production finally ceased although 3.5cc PB replicas were made in 2000 by CS in China.

Anderson

Anderson engines were designed by Mel Anderson and produced by 'Mel Anderson Manufacturing' based in Los Angeles, USA, between the years 1946 to 1953. Mel Anderson went on to design the Veco 100 series for Gil Henry who wanted to have his own model engine range to supplement his existing "Veco" range of model kits and parts.

ASP

ASP (Acceleration-Speed-Performance) engines were made in China from 1996 in Sanye’s aerospace workshops as a State subsidised sideline for USA’s 'World Engines', they were initially designed by engine designers Mui and Leung. The ASP line of engines we’re Introduced in 1988. In 1989 following a change of manufacturing location, finish quality was much improved and the engine range transitioned from ringed to ABC construction. Production ceased in early 2019. ASP produced Schnuerle ported two stroke engines and OHV four stroke engines in ringed and ABC versions of the following capacities, 25 - 28 - 32 - 40 - 46 - 52 - 52fs - 61 - 75 - 80fs - 91 - 91fs - 108 - 120 - 180 Cu In.

Davies-Charlton & Co was formed in 1947 by Hefin Davies and was located initially in Barnoldswick, Lincolnshire, England. In 1952 it gained control over Allbon Engineering’s engines but still marketed the engine range under the Allbon name. In 1952 Davies-Charlton became a limited company and became Davies-Charlton Ltd. this was probably to allow Alan Allbon to become a share holder in Davies-Charlton as he became responsible for its engine design and production at this time. In 1955 D.C. re-located to the Isle of Man and in 1963 started to make some of the Frog engines which had been out of production for several years following IMA ceasing it’s model engine production. In 1982 D.C. ceased production and sold off all remaining parts and engines.

Dooling

The three Dooling brothers, Russell, Harris and Tom, started Dooling Bros. in Los Angeles USA 1938 producing tethered car kits. Once WW2 ended they started engine design work and in 1947 started production of the famous Spark ignition Dooling 61 racing engine. Russell did most the design work with Harris leading the actual engineering production, Tom was the public face of the company entering and wining car races and being the one who drove sales. As supplied was an excellent engine but if tuned to the limit tended to have crankcase failures, in 1955 the AMCRA asked Bruce Underwood to design a replacement crankcase and the famous Yellow Jacket Dooling was born. With the invention of the glow plug the brothers added the Dooling 29 glow plug engine to their range in 1949 which was another immediate racing success.

ENYA

The ENYA engines were manufactured by the ENYA Model Products Company Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1949 a few years after the end of WW2, the company quickly gained recognition among modellers worldwide in the early 1950s. ENYA 60 Typhoon, mod 5002 (1954-65)

The six bolt front housing 63 (1954-57) and 60 engines were the only ENYA engines to use sand castings and also to be serial numbered. Approximately 5,000 60’s were produced and 1,000 63’s. In 1959  a throttle equipped 60 TV became available.

Frog (Flies Right Off Ground!)

Frog engines were made by International Model Aircraft (IMA), Merton, London, UK. Engine production started in 1946. IMA ceased all production of engines in 1962 as sales had reduced significantly. In 1964 it was realised there was still a small demand for Frog engines so all tooling was shipped to D.C. on the Isle of Man who produced the 80 ser 3, 100 ser 3, 150 ser 3, 249 BB and the 349 BB until 1966.

HB

Helmut Burnhardt made the Veco range under licence from K&B branded as "Veco Europe" in Germany, they featured modified castings with removable front housings, they later sold the engines under their own name HB. Later production 40 and 61 engines had optional PDP porting. The power increase with Perry Directional Porting added to standard loop scavenging is a direct result of the engine being able to "breath better" at higher RPM than had been possible with just the standard loop scavenging. Both K&B and HB engines have now been acquired by RJL Industries who supply engines and spare parts from America.

It is of note that HB supplied the U.S. military with thousands of their 10cc loop scavenged engines for radio controlled target drones, many of these have now found there way in to the public domain. As the drone engines were not expected to survive for any length of time, the front ball bearing was never fitted to reduce cost, instead a solid spacer was used. If you have one of these it is recommended that you replace the spacer with a ball bearing, this will restore the engines life expectancy to that of the commercial version.

HGK

HGK Products Co. Ltd, was an engine manufacture located in Tokyo Japan, they produced their first engine in 1978, the HGK 40SF. By 1981 HGK were marketing 15, 21, 40 and 45 capacity engines, unusually for his period they all featured AAC pistons and liners. The 45 was available as front and rear induction and aircraft or marine configurations. Production ceased in 1986, remaining parts being sold on to RJL (MECOA) in the USA.

HORNET

Hornet Motors was formed in 1939 by Walt Cave, Charlie Anderson and Ray Snow Jr. after WW2 only Ray Snow remained involved and Hornet engines were no longer available by the early 1950’s.Hornet 60 engines with V1 to V4500 serial numbers were produced from 1945 to 1950, lack of a machined drive square on the crankshaft means the engine was intended to be used as a car or hydroplane engine.

HORNET 60 Bulge Bypass (1949)

Woody Bartelt reproduction, these engines were never sold by Hornet as they were factory conversions completed after Hornet production had ceased. The Bulge bypass modification kit required the owner to drill extra transfer ports in the liner and also fit a larger aluminium venturi. Customers engines could be sent back to Hornet to be converted or the conversion kit sent via post.

HP engines were made by Hirtenberger Pattronenfabrik of Hirtenberg, Austria.

HP engines were originally produced by Hirtenberger Patronen an Austrian munitions company (the factory is located in Hirtenberg, Patronen means cartridge - hence the name), production has now been taken over by MECOA (Model Engine Corporation of America) P.O. Box 98, Sierra Madre, CA 91025, U.S.A.

1962
HP started design and development work on a small twin cylinder model engine intended to power military drone aircraft for target practice.

1963 - 1968
Paul Bugl, a gifted international standard model flyer, develops 2.5 and 10cc competition engines both at home and at work in HP's model engine department.

1969
HP entered the mainstream model engine market, they did so with a revolutionary new Schnuerle ported rear bell valve 10cc engine designed by Austrian Paul Bugl, the engine was of course the HP61. This innovative rear induction power-house was shortly followed by a front induction version, the HP 61F. In order to facilitate the rapid introduction of a front induction version of the HP61, Peter Billes designed a new crankshaft and front housing was bolted on to the rear of the existing crankcase where the rear bell valve had been. The part of the main casting where the crankshaft had been was removed. Lacking lugs to bolt a back-plate to, a thread was cut internally and a large plug type back-plate, as found on many small diesel engines, was screwed in. The only disadvantage was that the exhaust stub was now on the right side of the engine, it was on the left side on the rear induction version.

HP.61's were slightly redesigned by Peter Billes, the front induction engine, the HP61f gained a more conventional bolt on back-plate and a new crankcase was made with lugs at the front and rear, this allowed inter-changeability between the rear and front induction engines. The rear induction HP61r gained a new separate bolt on front housing, the rear bell induction valve was replaced with a rotary disc. Both front and rear induction models had a new sleeve machined from a casting rather than solid, the con-rod was now drop forged and c-clips were utilised to retain the wrist-pin. Some engines were improved cosmetically by the addition of blue anodising to the cooling fins, this was only done for selected markets.

1972
A totally new Peter Billes designed engine was introduced, the HP40r-pr. This new engine, was, to say the least, spectacular! The HP40r-pr was a mass produced 6.5cc pylon racing engine that could hold its own with the best custom made engines in existence.

The HP40r-pr had a sophisticated Schnuerle porting system which was responsible for its remarkable power output (0.89 kW at 18000 rpm). The rear rotary disk induction system avoided lengthy gas passages and helped to pack the crankcase, the reduced crankcase volume, combined with superb porting, created a world beating engine. The HP40 was soon also available in de-tuned versions for R/C sport flyers in either front or rear induction.

1977
A new Peter Billes evolved 10cc engine was introduced, the HP61fs, this engine was in both appearance and design, was basically a scaled up HP40f.
HP made little or no contribution to the evolution of the two stroke model engine from this year on, Peter Billes had joined Webra 1972 to develop their Schnuerle porting Speed engines. The only two-stroke surprise still to come was a 20cc Gold Cup inline twin, this was based on two 61 Gold Cup crankcases effectively bolted together, little knowledge of two stroke porting and timing was required, mainly just competent re-hashing of tried and tested existing components.

Paul Bugl died this year.

The older 10cc engines, often referred to as the four bolt engines (the old engines had four head-bolts, the new six) dropped from production.

1979
A new range of engines were introduced - the Silver Star's and Gold Cup's - or were they?. The Silver Star engines were virtually the HP61fs with a black cylinder head, a rear disc induction version was introduced again following the HP40 layout, to complete the range the HP40's themselves were re-vamped as Silver Stars or Gold Cups with basically no changes at all!

The Gold Cup range were virtually the same as the Silver Star engines in all but colour, parts being interchangeable between common capacity and induction layout engines.
Crankcases were coated black which was said to help heat dissipation, heads were anodised gold 'cos they looked good!', the only noticeable physical difference between the ranges were that the gold heads were machined from bar stock and the 40's gained fins on the head they had never had or needed as the humble HP40.
It was reported that the increased head fin area aided cooling, which, while undoubtedly true, was probably not necessary. A more lightly scenario is that the high silicon content in a cast head made anodising to a pretty gold colour imposable - who would have paid extra for the resulting muddy brown head? Clearly a 'Brown Cup' engine range would not have been appealing to HP's marketing department.

Hirtenberger Patronen no longer had the two stroke genius of Paul Bugl available and Peter Billes moved to WEBRA to design their Speed range of engines, fortunately for modellers they did still however have exceptional engineering capability, and resources.

HP's engineering ingenuity was successfully put to the test with the design and production of superb small four stroke engines. The four stroke engine development culminated in the VT range of engines. For the first time ever, small capacity mass produced engines were small enough, light enough, and cheap enough to be used by R/C flyers world wide!

1990 Hirtenberger Patronen ceased their involvement with model engines, selling all interests and rights of their current engine range and brands to the American company RJL Industries (MECOA)

HP. 61 R/C began reaching the market early in the 1968 season - HP 61 R/C was totally unorthodox, to some extent this is evident even in it's external appearance with Schnuerle porting and bell valve induction, although a desaxe design the cylinder offset was reverse to that normally used. The HP61 engine featured twin piston rings, a very long crankshaft and die cast conrod, the selling price was high compared to other 10cc engines. When tested it was found to be the most powerful 10cc R/C engine reviewed to date and was the first model production engine to use Schnuerle porting.

IRVINE

Irvine engines are produced by Irvine engines Limited, located in London. Irvine engines being an established importer and distributor of model engines decided to create its own range of British made engines, its first one the Irvine 40 sport MK1 entered the market place in 1977, a more powerful MK2 version was introduced in 1980 with a black plastic backplate. By 1981 the 40 was available in rear induction and 20 and 30 size engines added, in 1982 a 25 and the Irvine sport 61 joined the range. In later years more modern designs were introduced, these were manufactured in Japan by OS with distinctive red painted crankcases. Irvine Engines ceased production in 2006.

JBA - "Jiangnan Blue Arrow" engines are manufactured by Xiangtan Jiangnan Model Engine Co.Ltd, Xiangtan City, Hunan , China. They have been designing and manufacturing engines for other brands for many years( 200,000 per year). In 2007 JBA introduced a line of engines bearing their own name. The JBA two-stroke glow engine range covers capacities from 2.0cc to 22.5cc. JBA engines and spares are available from Kangke USA.

JEN

JEN engines were made in China for Just Engines between 2004 and 2013, the range consisted of a 37, 47, 57 and 91. All the engines featured a distinctive black crankcase and mauve cylinder head.

Kalistratov

K series engines were designed by the Russian engine designer Gennadiy Kalistratov (who passed away in 2009) - some engines were later produced by MHZ in Germany under a licence agreement. Marine engines produced were in 21, 45 and 67 capacities.

The Kraft k61 was designed by K&B's Roger Theobald and produced by K&B for Phil Kraft who sold them from the mid 1970's. The engine is a Schnuerle ported ringed engine fitted with Perry carburettor & fuel pump. Although no longer made by  K&B, MECOA now produce the engine and spare parts as the RJL 61
