Laser

Laser Engines were first produced in 1983 Following a UK government "Initiative grant" to ACG Ltd owned by Mr Reg Gross and based in Hemel Hempstead, UK, to produce the four stroke engines designed by Neil Tidey. In 1994 to cope with increased demand AGC Sales Ltd was formed to deal with engine marketing. Various engine capacities are available as single cylinder or V twin configurations,. Laser engines are now fully manufactured by CNC machinery from bar-stock (early examples used a cast front housing). The 2021 engine range consists of 11.5cc to 29.5cc single cylinder engines and V twins of 33cc to 64cc all still based on the original four stroke 61 design by Neil Tidey, Production is currently about 2,000 engines per year. It is of note all carburettors used were made by Irvine engines until they ceased production in 2006 and Laser had to make their own carburettors in-house. In 1992 the 62, 75, 90, 150v and 180v engines were discontinued and replaced by the Laser-70, 80, 100, 160v and 200v.

LEO was a budget model engine range produced in Taiwan, Republic of China. The LEO engine range had a marked similarity in design to those of O.S. and were produced between 2000 and 2009. Notably it was reported that LEO had strong links with Thunder Tiger via family relationships between their respective owners. The LEO engine range was distributed in the U.K. by Just Engines as economical sport engines.

Master Motors (Mactek Motopc)

Master Motors was formed in 1988 making industrial engines for sale in Russia, they started making model engines in the early 90’s for Russian modellers and in 1992 they began selling in the UK via Cheshire model supplies who distributed the engines in the UK. Master engines are produced in a small 10 man worker owned factory in Semibratovo, Yaroslavl region near Moscow in Russia. Their engine capacity range is from 1.5 cc to 15 cc, most are glow plug engines with a few 2.5cc diesel models.

MDS (МДС on Russian market engines)

MDS was formed in 1985 to produce model engines for Russian internal civilian use, export of engines commenced in 1996. The production of MDS engines was undertaken by a division of Savma (Saveiovskoe production association "PROGRESS”), located in Kimry which is 98 miles North of Moscow in Russia, their primary work was the manufacture of machine tools for Russian military aerospace facilities under the control of DOSAAF (a government organisation responsible for aircraft repair plants). As the Russian Cyrillic alphabet is different than ours having 33 letters, crankcase lettering on engines made for internal use are often misread as MAC when it is in fact МДС (this translates into English as MDS).

This is a very limited production 6.5cc marine engine made for the use of the Russian/Ukrainian national FSR boating team in the 1980s. It was effectively a Soviet take of the OPS 40 engine of the period, it was rendered obsolete when the FSR 40 capacity class became a FSR 45 capacity class.

It would have been far less expensive and time consuming to have had one of their western Embassies just purchase some OPS engines but the Soviet state needed to win world titles with models piloted by Russians using Russian designed boats and engines, however it was ok to use western engines as a pattern for creating their own version, in this case they altered the induction from disk to drum and copied the basic design of the latest OPS carburettor being used on their larger capacity engines.

Effectively this is an OPS inspired limited production engine probably built by a division of Savma who produced MDS engines and was located 98 miles north of Moscow, the engines were only issued to state sponsored international FSR 40 racers.

Merco

The first production MERCO (Model Engine Research Co) engines, the 29 and 35 were made in 1959, designed by Ron Checksfield and produced by the Model Engine Research Co. Ltd., from which the band name MERCO is derived. In 1961 just as the prototype MERCO 49 had been completed the company was sold to D.J. Allen Engineering Limited (AM engine manufactures) based in Edmonton, London, UK. The MERCO 49 went into production in 1962 with the 61 entering production in 1964. It must be noted that the Merco 29, 35, 49 and 61 were all designed and developed by Ron Checksfield who had been a joint founder of Model Engine Research Co. Ltd and had become an employee of D.J. Allen Engineering following the change of ownership. In the late 1970’s D.J. Allen Engineering Limited engine interests were sold to an engineering company called Ferraris. A final change of own a ship occurred in 1983 when Forest sold his AM and Merco ingests to one of their employees, Reg Hills who produced the range under the name of Forest Engineering. It was Reg Hills who to a limited degree tested ABC piston/cylinder technology, the AM diesels were also kept in production. Ron Hills was only ever able to break even financially so sold the engine business to Premier, they traded as Premier Engines with production taking place at Southminster in Essex. Premier introduced the Merco 30 and 40 with black crankcases as well as ABN piston/liner technology, unfortunately it was too little too late.

Bill Morley the Manager of HJN's shop in Holloway Road, was inspired by seeing the performance of an American Veco 35 in 1957, there was no British made engine which could perform the same! Due to strictly enforced currency restrictions it was impractical if not imposable to import engines from the USA - The solution? - Design and Produce something just as good or even better! Unfortunately Bill Morley had little knowledge of engineering let alone two stroke engine design. Enter Ron Checkfield, Bill had had dealings with Ron who tuned team race engines, and they had become quite good friends. In mid 1958 Bill approached Ron and put forward a proposition to design a new engine from scratch - The Merco.

Designing and producing an engine from a "standing start" is not easy, first had to come the design, then a prototype, followed by testing. Premises needed to be located, machine tools sourced, purchased and installed. Production Drawings created, decisions regarding which parts should be produced in house and which could be cost effectively be contracted out had to be made, once these decisions had been made contactors had to be located and costing and contracts agreed.

All of this is quite a daunting task for someone with experience of the engineering industry, without it. a mine field is quite a good description. At this point Bill Morley had a stroke of luck in the form of Dennis Allen of Allen Engineering (maker of AM engines at this time). Dennis gave Bill invaluable advice, he suggested that Bill rent a workshop in Balfour Mews, Lower Edmonton which he had used himself in the mid fifties and was still vacant, the workshop was owned by Stan and Maurice Hayer who had their own workshop directly underneath the vacant one, this was especially useful as it was possible to have the Hayers contract to make the crankshafts, cylinders and pistons and just carry them upstairs. Dennis Allen also introduced Bill to various Companies skilled in drop forging (for the con rods) and die casting firms (crankcase castings).

Bill Morley Specified the capacity of the new engines and their intended use, the sizes were 0.29ci and 0.35ci, the use to be C/L stunt, and Ron Checkfield designed and built them.
Six prototypes were produced, one was used by Bill Morley to place second in the 1958 Nationals, absolute proof of the excellence of Ron's design. After a few teething troubles, production started in 1959. Distribution of the Merco's was put into the hands of Bill's ex employer HJN via it's wholesale distribution network Mercury Models.

Unfortunately after three years of production there was still no profit, the import problems which had made the original business plan so appealing had receded and consequently their was an increased level of competition, Bill had invested all he had into the venture, and could not afford to risk losing everything, at this point he was offered a position with KeilKraft, the decision was made! Merco would have to be sold.

There was just one problem with selling Merco, with the position the company was in, who would want to buy it? Bill had a brainwave, if they could design and produce prototype 0.49ci and 0.61ci R/C engine's for the new emerging R/C market, and make it the best in the world, Merco would look quite attractive to a potential purchaser. Bill explained the financial situation to Ron, and his solution of a large R/C engine to help attract purchasers.

Ron took Bill's decision to sell Merco well considering Merco had been his full time job for over three years, and he had done all the design work, he replied in regard to a Merco R/C 49/61, that he would "see to it that it would be the best R/C engine in the world", many would say he was as good as his word!

Within a surprisingly short time three prototypes of the new large R/C engine were created, again with a little help from Dennis Allen who made the three prototype crankshafts.

Fortunately for Ron Checkfield, when a buyer was found in 1961, it was no less than Dennis Allen of Allen Engineering at Upper Edmonton (Ron Burford of ETA instruments had been interested but would have moved production to Watford effectively leaving Ron Checkfield without a job, commuting to Watford not really being practical at that time).

From 1961 Merco and AM engines were both made under the same roof. The Merco 49 went into production in 1962, and the Merco 61 in 1964. The Merco 61 mkII with the twin plug head and various other detail changes, was introduced in 1966.

In the late 1970's the Business was sold to Ferrari's Engineering, an engineering firm specialising in medical instruments. The Engine production continued until the model engine section was sold separately to a long standing employee, Reg Hills in 1983, the new business was named Forest Engineering, as Reg lived in Waltham Forest. Ron Checkfield, Merco's designer stayed with Ferrari's until his retirement in 1992.

Forest Engineering made the whole Merco range of engines as well as the equally famous AM engine range albeit with sand cast crankcases, the original patterns for the die cast crankcases had been mislaid at some point, so die cast crankcases were used as patterns for sand-castings.
The newer Merco's have been modernised with lager gas ports and crankshaft, ABC piston/liner, and black anodised crankcases. One hundred 20cc flat twins have also been produced.

MVVS

MVVS (Modelarske Vyrobni Vyvojore Stredisko) engines were designed and produced initially in 1952 at the state sponsored Model Development Centre located at Brno in Czechoslovakia. Until 1954 engines were only supplied to Czechoslovakian modellers who showed potential in international competitions, after this they were available throughout Czechoslovakia in limited numbers. This changed in 1958 when small scale mass production was started, eventually engines became commercially available in the western world. Nordec

North Downs Engineering based in Whyteleafe, UK, only ever made one engine, the Nordec 60, but there are effectively four different engines. The MkI of 1948 and the MkII of 1949, either mark could be supplied for either spark ignition or glow. Nordec are best known in the late 1940's as makers of Marshall-Nordec superchargers, these were common but expensive after market add-ons for sports cars like MG-TCs and Allards. Marshall-Nordec superchargers had a boost pressure of 6-8 psi which normally gave an impressive 80% power increase. Nordec engines tended to follow their roots - most found there way into tethered racing cars, this has resulted in many surfacing with the prop driver missing, probably discarded 75 years ago when installed in a car.

Nova Rossi

In 1966 the Rossi brothers Cesare and Ugo formed "Fratelli Rossi" in Brescia Italy. They soon gained a reputation for producing the most powerful racing engines in the world. In 1982 Cesare Rossi left "Fratelli Rossi" and two years later, with his wife Graziosa Barchi, formed "Novarossi Nitro Micro Engines’ in Monticelli Brusati, Italy. The main emphasis was on the production of car engines but there have been exceptions, until November 2019 the Novarossi REX engine series were produced for aircraft and helicopters, Top engines are produced for marine use. Cesare Rossi unfortunately passed away in 2015.
